Spring brings a wave of creative workshops
’Tis the season to get crafty! This spring welcomes new artistic, creative and reflective workshops as the island’s creatives present new participatory events that engage the senses. Here is a selection of workshops to look forward to in the upcoming weeks.
This Wednesday, Head of Education of the AG Leventis Gallery, Theodora Demetriou invites children aged 7 to 11 for a creative workshop titled Christoforos Savva: An Unknown Archive Comes to Life.
Children will become young explorers and discover the creative world of Cypriot artist Christoforos Savva. Through special ‘archive’ folders filled with images, materials and small secrets from the artist, children observe, imagine and connect clues like real art investigators. At the end, inspired by their discoveries, they will create their own collaborative artwork using colours, textures and different materials, bringing the artist’s ideas back to life. Two sessions will take place, one at 11am and another at 3pm.
A workshop in Pyla, Larnaca, this Saturday gets into the spirit of the season with the Create Your Very Own Mossy Easter Bunny event at 10.30am. Children and adults will get to celebrate Easter by playing with nature, where they will design and craft their own mossy Easter bunny as a fun decoration piece. Tickets can be purchased via the online form on the Facebook event.
On the following Saturday, a crafty journaling workshop by The.Curious.Curly will take place in Nicosia, inviting the public to reflect on matters of the heart. In a gentle, curated space, the facilitator will guide participants through journaling prompts on love to explore how each person feels the presence of love in their life, how they express it and then channel that feeling into crafting a personalised love jar for someone special, filled with all the reasons why they love them.
Blending writing and creative exercises, participants will be treated to a mindful and slow morning (10.30am-12.30pm) in the heart of old Nicosia. Registrations for the Tiny Notes, Big Love workshop can be made online via the form on the Facebook event.
In Larnaca, the Youth Makerspace continues its Back to the Future series, backed by the Youth Board of Cyprus with a Jewellery-making workshop on April 18 and a Silk Printing workshop on April 25, which wraps up the month-long series with six different workshops.
On the last Sunday of the month, April 26, 9am-1.30pm, a personal development with ceramics workshop will take place at Homa & Nero, Nicosia. Career & Life Coach Marlene Michaelidou will lead a small number of participants through reflective exercises and discussion, to explore the living metaphor: just as clay takes shape in your hands, so does your life through your choices. Then, guided by a ceramicist at Homa & Nero, the participants will play with clay to create an object they get to take home. A sewing workshop with Georgia Moditi and Anna Apostolou will take place at AG Leventis Gallery on April 29, guiding adults on how to make a textile vase with felting motifs. Participants will have the opportunity to learn basic sewing techniques and needle felting while creating their own fabric vase inspired by Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s artwork White Roses.
Finally, a spring cyanotype workshop will remind participants to connect with and observe nature around them by learning the camera-less photographic method – cyanotype. Anasa Cyprus organises the workshop, led by experimental photographer The.Curious.Curly. A small group will gather at Ananke Home in Ayioi Omologites for an afternoon of creativity and inspiration, learning to make photographic prints made using sunlight exposure, chemical solutions and flowers. At the end of the workshop, participants will take home two original cyanotype prints they will create from scratch. Spots are limited and registrations can be made through the online event.
