Muttaqi, UAE FM Discuss Regional Tensions and Kabul-Islamabad Relations
Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi held a phone call with the UAE foreign minister on regional tensions, Pakistan ties and diplomacy.
Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s acting foreign minister, has held a telephone conversation with Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the United Arab Emirates’ deputy prime minister and foreign minister, to discuss key political and security issues.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Taliban’s foreign ministry said the two sides discussed bilateral relations, issues between the Taliban and the United States, the regional situation and the latest developments in Taliban-Pakistan relations.
According to the statement, Muttaqi warned that actions by the United States and Israel against Iran threaten the security of the entire region. He said the expansion of war and instability in the Middle East has raised serious concerns.
The United Arab Emirates has in recent years sought to play a more active diplomatic role in Afghanistan and wider regional mediation efforts. The UAE has also maintained practical and political engagement with the Taliban authorities.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, according to the Taliban statement, described Taliban-US relations as important and expressed the UAE’s readiness to play a constructive role in addressing regional problems.
Muttaqi also said the Taliban wants to resolve its disputes with Pakistan through dialogue and mutual understanding. He added that they would not allow Afghanistan soil to be used against Pakistan.
He further said that all Taliban military actions against Pakistan had been defensive in nature and that they reserve what it called the “right to self-defense” in the event of any aggression.
Relations between the Taliban and Pakistan have remained strained in recent months, with repeated diplomatic and security tensions. Islamabad has accused the Taliban of failing to curb armed groups operating from Afghanistan territory, an allegation the Taliban has repeatedly denied.
He also stressed that continued tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan would benefit neither side and said the UAE would continue its efforts to help reduce tensions and support a peaceful resolution.
The call comes at a time of heightened regional instability, as diplomatic contacts among regional actors appear to be gaining urgency amid fears of wider conflict.
