The Most Influential Rock Band Ever Played Their First Show 65 Years Ago Today
On March 21, 1961, legendary rock group The Beatles played their first evening show at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, where they would become local stars before breaking onto the global stage a few years later.
The band's lineup originally consisted of John Lennon and Paul McCartney on vocals and bass, George Harrison on lead guitar, Stuart Sutcliffe on bass, and Pete Best on drums.
The lineup would change several times over the coming years, with Sutcliffe ultimately leaving the band to pursue a different career and Pete best being replaced with Ringo Starr for the band's first studio album—but this roster was consistent for their early performances.
The band frequently supported other acts at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, with Lennon and McCartney stealing the show with their rock-and-roll covers of popular songs at the time. They developed a strong local following that ultimately pushed the club to let them perform their own evening shows beginning in March 1961.
At the same time, The Beatles were constantly touring clubs in Hamburg to make a name for themselves and earn some money to fund their first studio album, Please Please Me.This project would later transform The Beatles from local heroes to national icons—with later albums such as A Hard Day's Night and Help! evolving them into global rock stars.
During their performances at the Cavern Club, Lennon & McCartney would typically take it in turns to sing covers of popular blues, swing, and rock-and-roll songs that had made it big in America—their original songwriting didn't come until later.
In the years since their historic performances, the Cavern Club has become somewhat of a pilgrimage site for Beatles fans. It's where their career started, and the venue remains one of Liverpool's most exciting and dynamic music venues today. Modern artists including Oasis, Adele, and Arctic Monkeys have all performed there.
