Tottenham step up hunt for new sporting director and one target has a link to Pochettino
Tottenham Hotspur have stepped up their chase for a new sporting director, and two big names are part of their wishlist.
Fabio Paratici departed Tottenham just after the January transfer window to take over as Fiorentina’s head of football.
The Italian’s exit, just months after being appointed by Spurs, came as a shock to the supporters, leaving Johan Lange as the club’s only sporting director.
Lange has insisted that Tottenham have big ambitions for the summer, and it has now been revealed that the Dane will get some assistance in identifying and signing the right players.
Tottenham have two experienced sporting directors in their sights
The Telegraph have revealed that Tottenham have now stepped up their hunt for a new sporting director and have already made checks on two candidates.
Those are Chelsea’s Paul Winstanley and Al-Diriyah’s director Dougie Freedman, who have both had successful spells in the Premier League.
Winstanley has been at Chelsea since November 2022 and has overseen the signings of Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo, Estavao Willian and Joao Pedro.
Meanwhile, Freedman is best known for his work at Crystal Palace, taking the likes of Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi, Michael Olise and Adam Wharton to the South Coast club.
Interestingly, Winstanley worked at Chelsea for one season with Mauricio Pochettino, who is one of the leading candidates for the Tottenham job.
Spurs may struggle to get Paul Winstanley or Dougie Freedman
The Telegraph reveal that Winstanley is contracted until 2031 to Chelsea following his recent contract extension and is not expected to leave Stamford Bridge.
Given that Freedman only joined Al-Diriyah last year, there are also doubts over whether he would leave the Saudi club for Spurs.
The outlet adds that Tottenham want to have a new sporting director in place for the newcomer to have a say on their next head coach.
