Jenna Ortega then left due to “scheduling conflicts,” as did original director Christopher Landon over backlash to the decision to fire Melissa, which was not his doing.
Kevin Williamson took over as director and co-wrote the screenplay.
Sources say the rewrites to remove Melissa and Jenna‘s characters cost roughly $500,000, per Variety.
Neve Campbell, the series’ original final girl, reportedly secured a $7 million deal to return, while returning star Courteney Cox reportedly secured $2 million.
Scream 7 has a reported $45 million budget, up from Scream 6‘s $35 million, reportedly partly due to inflation, which has impacted “everything from set construction to travel expenses.”
Insiders suggest to Variety that “plans are already in place for the killer’s lethal return in an eighth film.”
