Crews in Big Sur ramp up cleanup on Highway 1 near Regent’s Slide; reopening estimate pending
By Bay City News
Highway crews accelerated cleanup efforts Friday along a closed stretch of Highway 1 near Regent’s Slide following clear weather, transportation officials said.
Workers began clearing debris and mud at first light from a catchment area where material had overtopped concrete barriers along the northbound shoulder.
Transportation officials said they expect to provide an estimate on reopening the roadway by the end of the day.
A 6.8-mile segment of the highway remains closed from about two miles north of Lucia to one mile south of the Esalen Institute, according to Caltrans.
Caltrans noted that more than 80 miles of Highway 1 remain open from San Luis Obispo north to communities including Cambria, San Simeon, Ragged Point, Gorda, Treebones and Lucia.
Another 45-mile stretch is open from Monterey south to just north of the closure, allowing access to much of the Big Sur coastline.
