Josh Peck Shares Grooming Advice for Modern Men (Exclusive)

The actor and social media star Josh Peck told Men's Journal about the simple changes that upgraded his personal grooming routine. As he approaches 40 years old, embracing hair and skin care has been a “total game-changer." That has inspired him to believe that modern men shouldn't be intimidated to step up their grooming habits to make the "best version" of themselves.

Peck revealed how much of a difference better grooming can make for men while talking to Men's Journal about the OGX "Hairsplaining" campaign he starred in with his wife, Paige O'Brien.

Men’s Journal: Was filming OGX’s “Hairsplaining” ad as fun as it looked? Because it looked like that ad was a lot of fun to record.

Josh Peck: I'm so glad that you felt the fun that we had. I give OGX a lot of credit. They found a great team to put together the idea and they allowed me to, “Josh it up” and put my own spin on things. And it was great to work with my wife. These are her words, of course, not mine. But, it's easy for her to be annoyed with me. So, she was right in the pocket.

Men’s Journal: I was going to ask you if you had any control over the ad, because it reminded me a lot of the feel of your social media presence.

Josh Peck: Yeah. I think we were able to really collaborate in that way. Carlyn Hudson, our director, really captured my voice from watching a lot of my social. On the day I would throw out a couple of improvs here or there. I probably just flex too much, honestly. But overall, it's like any great collaboration. We sort of all came together trying to figure out what would be the best way to mansplain.

Men’s Journal: What made you want to do this ad? I'm sure you get lots of opportunities thrown at you all the time. What appealed to you about this specifically?

Josh Peck: I'm a real user of OGX. It's taken up a warm spot in my shower for more than a decade. It's always been in my house or in my in-laws' house. And so, when this opportunity came about, it just felt like a really easy way for me to use my comedy and creativity with a product that I actually use. And, as you know, the line from the ad, it makes your hair jacked, and I'm on a fitness journey. So it really felt serendipitous.

Men’s Journal: One of the things about the ad that I thought was really interesting was that it felt like it reflected a lot of the dynamics in your relationship. As somebody who is known for your humor, how do you feel the commercial reflects in your real life?

Josh Peck: I think I try to bring comedy to everything that I do. The thing that attracted me most to working with OGX was that they led with that. And it made a lot of sense, especially for this.

I've always used the OGX Bond Protein Repair, the conditioner, and the shampoo. But I started saying to myself, “Maybe I need to treat myself with a mask every now and then.” It's funny, after we shot it inspired me to up my hair game a little bit. So I hope that it inspires the masses as well.

Men’s Journal: The ad focuses on the idea of mansplaining. As somebody who did such a fantastic job of portraying an over-the-top, but also somewhat realistic version of that, what do you think that says about modern masculinity?

Josh Peck: I don't know if I think that deeply. But I think an asset for anyone, and as it applies to modern masculinity, is having a sense of humor. And I think this ad has a great sense of humor to it. So I think leading with that is always a wonderful way to be disarming and warm and welcoming. Comedy has been an asset throughout my life and I'm glad that I've been able to continue to use it.

Men’s Journal:  What is your take on how men have changed the way that they take care of themselves now? Whereas back in the day, it was just a bar of soap, and that was it.

Josh Peck: I know. It was a bar of soap on your whole body, even on your hair! I think it's great, and it's not that intimidating. As a guy who's just come into his moisturizing journey over the last couple of years, I find that whether it's skin care or hair care, it's quite easy to throw on a Bond Protein Repair mask for a few minutes and then feel the results for weeks. So, I think it's about just embracing the change and not being intimidated by something new.

Men’s Journal: What would you say to other men who are more old school and still have that one bar of soap in their shower, or they keep it relatively simplistic? How would you convince them that they should go that extra step to take care of themselves?

Josh Peck: There's a good access point for everyone. Maybe you do the bar of soap, and then you just incorporate the Bond Protein Repair conditioner, and then all of a sudden you're like, “Huh, I am feeling slightly more silky smooth. Maybe I will try out a couple of other products.” It's like you can piecemeal it a little bit at a time. Don’t feel like you have to turn your routine on its head right away.

I was always intimidated by having too many products. And I always just wanted to travel light. Now I have a couple of core things that I use, which I feel I get massive results from. Men’s Journal: What are the things that you find you get massive results from?

I don't mean to divulge too much, but I started moisturizing as a guy who's getting close to 40. And it was a total game-changer. I could not get over how much better my skin felt, and I feel like I look better. And I think that's important when you do those little things to feel like you're making the best version of you.

Men’s Journal: Is there anything else you want to say to the readers of Men's Journal?

Josh Peck:  What's my message to the men of the world? That's intimidating. What I would say is lead with a sense of humor, much like the ad, kind of what I said before. I think sometimes we can have instincts as men to muscle things and I think sometimes when you put your shoulders back, and you sit back on your heels, and you're willing to find the comedy in all things, you sometimes get a better result.
