Kid Rock Breaks Silence on Bad Bunny's Super Bowl Halftime Show: 'Poor Kid'
After staging an alternate show to Bad Bunny's official NFL halftime performance, Kid Rock has shared his reaction to the mainstream show now that he's watched the performance.
Speaking in a televised interview on Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle, the musician was critical of the show, to say the least.
“Like most people, I didn’t understand any of it,” he told hostLaura Ingraham, referring to the fact that the Puerto Rican rapper's set was performed entirely in Spanish. “I saw there was a lot of dancers and big to-do stuff. Said he wanted to have a dance party. Looked like he had one."
"Not my cup of tea," he concluded.
Bad Bunny's performance at Super Bowl LX at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, broke the social media records for the big game. The 12-minute performance, featuring musical guest appearances from Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin, reached an average of 128.2 million viewers on Sunday.
Online, total social consumption of the halftime show — including fans, owned platforms, broadcast partners, and influencers — hit four billion views in a day, up 137% from last year, according to Ripple Analytics.
Kid Rock headlined Turning Point USA’s 36-minute All-American Halftime Show, streamed online from Atlanta, Georgia. “The All-American Halftime Show is an opportunity for all Americans to enjoy a halftime show with no agenda other than to celebrate faith, family, and freedom,” the official description for the show reads.
The alternate halftime show peaked at 5 million views on YouTube, according to ESPN. Nielsen does not currently have the statistics for its viewership on other platforms, or on the Charge! broadcast of the show. YouTube figures show there have been 21,208,583 views of Kid Rock's show from its initial broadcast until Tuesday night, according to TPUSA's official page. Bad Bunny's show has had 61,311,972 views on YouTube in the same timeframe.
The show featured supporting performances from musicians Lee Brice, Brantley Gilbert, and Gabby Barrett. Many online critics accused Kid Rock of lip-syncing during his set, but he cited a "syncing issue" with the stream as the source of the error. “Mainstream media, social media tries to amplify it. It would have been super easy to sync it up if it was prerecorded," he said.
Kid Rock did, however, clarify he holds no animosity towards Bad Bunny as a person. “I fault the NFL for putting him in that position and Turning Point for having to come out and have an alternative for people to watch. You know, it’s just — poor kid," he said.
