‘You will see dramatic reductions’: Trump gets drugmakers to slash prices for key prescriptions
President Donald Trump announced Thursday that the price of Ozempic will fall from more than $1,000 to $199, a dramatic reduction for one of the most expensive and widely used prescription drugs in the country.
Pharmacy “cash price” for a single Ozempic pen can exceed $1,300 at some U.S. outlets, according to pricing data. During the launch of Trump RX, Trump said manufacturers agreed to slash prices for popular GLP-1 weight-loss medications, insulin, asthma inhalers, and fertility drugs after sustained pressure from his administration.
“You will see dramatic reductions in the cost of popular weight loss drugs known as GLP-1. Novo Nordisk will be slashing the price as an example of Ozempic from more than $1,000 to $199, and the price of Wegovy from more than $1,300 to $199. Nobody can even believe it. A 578% difference. Eli Lilly, who’s been very helpful to us in getting this done, will be cutting the cost of its common insulin drug and medication from $200 to $25,” Trump said. “Nobody can believe it. $200 to $25. AstraZeneca slash in the price of a common inhaler from $458 to $51, a difference of nearly 800%, and we’re also delivering historic discounts for a couple struggling with infertility.”
Trump said couples facing infertility will also see significant relief as well. EMD Serono agreed to dramatically lower prices for in-vitro fertilization drugs, including Gonal-F, which Trump said carried the highest price in the developed world when sold in the United States.

“EMD Serono will dramatically cut the cost of its most common IVF drugs. For example, a single dose of the most common IVF drug in the country, Gonal-F, will plummet from the highest price in the developed world that we paid. The United States was subsidizing everybody. We paid the highest to the lowest price in the world, which we’ll be demonstrating very shortly,” Trump said.
Trump said administration officials would walk the public through how the new system functions.
“I have some very talented people coming up and showing you how it’s going to work and how the website works. All of these discounts and more will be available directly to consumers starting today at Trump RX,” Trump said.
Beginning in mid-May 2025, Trump set a new course on prescription drug costs by issuing an executive directive that ordered federal agencies to pursue pricing parity between the United States and peer countries overseas. That effort escalated on July 31, 2025, when Trump formally notified top drugmakers that they would be expected to lower U.S. prices to the minimum levels charged in other advanced economies. The letters laid out specific expectations and signaled that voluntary compliance would be preferable to regulatory confrontation.
Trump secured five separate agreements with major pharmaceutical companies, each designed to narrow or eliminate the price gap between American consumers and patients abroad. The agreements affected widely used medications relied upon by millions of people and produced broad-based cost reductions.
Trump has repeatedly said Americans face an unjust system in which they pay far more than foreign patients for identical drugs manufactured in the same facilities.
“So we would spend tremendous amounts of money in order to provide inexpensive drugs to another country. And when I say the price is different, you can see some examples where the price is beyond anything — four times, five times different,” Trump said.
