US Senator Ted Cruz Calls for Arming Iranian Protesters Immediately
US Republican Senator Ted Cruz has called for America to arm Iranian protesters “right now” to help overthrow the country’s ruling ayatollahs.
Cruz wrote on X Tuesday evening that arming protesters could help topple Iran’s leadership, which he says “constantly chants death to America.”
Iran has experienced widespread protests in recent weeks following a severe government crackdown that human rights groups describe as the deadliest since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. International organizations report that Iranian security forces have killed thousands of demonstrators, including bystanders, though the full scale of casualties remains difficult to verify due to information restrictions.
The Texas senator emphasized that overthrowing Iran’s government by its own people would make America “much safer” from regional threats.
Cruz’s remarks reflect growing calls among some US lawmakers for more aggressive support of Iranian opposition movements beyond sanctions and diplomatic pressure. However, directly arming protesters would represent a dramatic escalation in US policy and could be viewed internationally as military intervention in Iran’s internal affairs, potentially violating international law.
Iranian officials have repeatedly accused Western countries of interfering in the nation’s internal affairs amid the recent wave of mass demonstrations.
The protests erupted across Iran following renewed crackdowns on civil liberties and have drawn international attention to human rights violations by authorities.
Cruz’s proposal would mark a significant shift in US policy toward Iran, though it remains unclear whether the Trump administration would support such intervention.
