Afghanistan’s national futsal team has conducted its first official training session after arriving in Indonesia for the 2026 AFC Futsal Asian Cup.
The Afghanistan Football Federation said on Sunday, January 25, that the team has been placed in Group D alongside Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and Iran.
Afghanistan will open its campaign on Wednesday with a match against Saudi Arabia, a fixture seen as crucial for determining early group momentum.
The AFC Futsal Asian Cup is one of Asia’s most prestigious futsal competitions and serves as a key pathway toward global qualification tournaments.
In recent editions, Asian futsal has grown increasingly competitive, with West and Southeast Asian teams investing heavily in youth development and professional leagues.
According to the federation, head coach Majid Mortazai has called up 14 players to the national training camp for the continental tournament.
Team captain Mehdi Norouzi will miss the competition due to injury, while forward Mehran Gholami was not included in the final squad list.
Despite these absences, team officials say preparations are continuing as planned, with the squad focused on building cohesion and competitive readiness.
