28 Years Later 'Alpha' Chi Lewis-Parry Reacts To All The Fuss Over His Nude Scenes
Last year’s 28 Days Later sequel, 28 Years Later, introduced a new type of infected known as the “Alphas”, who were notably more physically dominant and roamed the plague-ridden UK totally nude.
Of these domineering zombified humans, the most talked-about was undoubtedly Samson – who made a big impact in last year’s Danny Boyle film thanks to his huge stature and, indeed, his huge prosthetic manhood.
Played by 6’8” former MMA fighter Chi Lewis-Parry, who reprises the role in the new sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, he has admitted he isn’t surprised by the attention that his prosthetic penis has garnered.
“I’m not mad about it – not even now. But I don’t want to take away an ounce of credibility from the immense work that everyone put into these films. Everyone is incredible. And I don’t want Samson’s prosthetic to steal any of the shine,” he told Variety.
Chi had previously told GQ around the release of the first movie that he was “proud” of people talking about his prosthetic appendage.
“I’m here for it, man!” he remarked. “No matter how bizarre people’s reactions might be, it’s all part of the world we’ve created, and I’m proud of it. So if people want to talk about my willy, they can talk about my willy.”
Samson’s ravaged, bloodied body in both films was actually a fully prosthetic suit, which took seven people six to eight hours to fit onto his body.
“You’d start around 2am, and then after 10-hour days with potential overtime, you might finish around 9pm,” Chi explained.
He added that the “tremendous workload” that went into the creation of fitting of his prosthetics included recreating the same full-body piece more than 25 times, as each suit was one-time use only.
The Bone Temple delves a little deeper into Samson’s 28 Years Later character, and shows his budding relationship with Ralph Fiennes’ Dr Kelson.
In one memorable scene, Ralph’s character takes the Alpha’s hand and dances with him to Duran Duran, which Chi has described as “the most fun I’ve had naked”, noting that the prosthetic in this scene features “a lot more veins” and “details” than the one seen in the first movie.
Prosthetic genitalia aside, the dance scene was all improvised by Ralph Fiennes.
“The whole performance was Ralph’s and it was just one of those moments. We could have taken it or not, and we chose to take it and it got used. And I think that just shows the connection me and him had,” Chi recalled.
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple launched to the top of the UK and Ireland box office upon its release earlier this month, opening to £3.3 million.
Following the success of both 28 Years Later movies, it was announced that a third instalment is in development, although no release date, cast, or director has been announced.
