Donald Trump Tells Iranian Protesters 'Help Is On Its Way' As Death Toll Tops 2,000
Donald Trump has told anti-government protesters facing a brutal crackdown in Iran that “help is on its way”.
The US president told opponents of the Islamic regime to “keep protesting, take over your institutions” as the estimated death toll reached 2,000.
Trump also said he had cancelled all meetings with Iranian officials “until the senseless killing of protesters stops”.
He spoke out on his Truth Social platform ahead of Tehran’s first public execution of a protester.
Trump said: “Iranian Patriots – KEEP PROTESTING, TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!! Save the names of the killers and abusers. They will pay a big price. I have cancelled all meetings with Iranian Officials until the senseless killing of protesters STOPS. HELP IS ON ITS WAY. MIGA!!!”
Nationwide protests have rocked Iran over the past two weeks in a huge challenge to the country’s brutal regime.
The trigger for the uprising was soaring inflation, with the prices of basic goods like cooking oil and chicken soaring overnight.
There’s additional fury from young people, particularly women, over state repression, poverty and ethnic division.
Foreign secretary Yvette Cooper told MPs on Tuesday that she had spoken to Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi and voiced the UK’s “total abhorrence of the killings, the violence and the repression”.
She also said new restrictions will be brought in on “full and further sanctions” in Iran’s oil, energy, nuclear and financial sectors.
Cooper said the Iranian government was “peddling its manufactured narrative of foreign manipulation” and had portrayed protesters as criminals and terrorists.
She said: “The United Kingdom condemns in the strongest of terms the horrendous and brutal killing of Iranian protesters, and we demand that the Iranian authorities respect the fundamental rights and freedoms of their citizens.”
