National Weather Service Issues ‘Stay Inside’ Warning as 115 mph Winds, 30 Inches of Snow Hit
The National Weather Service has issued a number of warnings as strong winds and heavy snow are expected to hit this weekend.
"A strong Bering Sea low pressure will bring strong winds, heavy snow, and blizzard conditions to Southwest Alaska beginning on Sunday morning. While conditions improve for most areas on Monday, hazardous winter weather will linger into Tuesday near Lake Iliamna and the Western Alaska Range," the NWS revealed.
Alaska Bracing for 115 mph Winds, 30 Inches of Snow
A high wind warning is in effect for parts of Alaska starting from Sunday morning through Monday as the state braces for winds up to 115 mph. A high wind warning is issued when an area is hit with sustained winds over 60 mph.
"Take Action! Sustained, strong winds with even stronger gusts are happening. Seek shelter. If you are driving, keep both hands on the wheels and slow down," the NWS said.
While parts of the state brace for extremely dangerous winds, other parts of the state will start to receive heavy snowfall on Sunday afternoon. "Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 12 and 24 inches, with localized amounts up to 30 inches from Port Alsworth to Iliamna. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph. Visibility reduced to one half mile or less at times," the NWS revealed.
"Snow will develop by Sunday afternoon and continue through Monday before tapering off to snow showers by Monday evening. Areas of stronger winds, especially around Lake Iliamna, may produce blowing snow that could significantly reduce visibility."
National Weather Service Warns to Stay Inside
In the event of a strong wind event, the National Weather Service warned residents to stay inside.
"Immediately go inside a sturdy building during a high wind warning or severe thunderstorm warning and move to an interior room or basement," it said. "If you are in a mobile home, move to a sturdy building before the winds pick up or the storm system reaches your location."
