UN Rapporteur Urges Independent Probe Into Killing of Former Military Officers in Tehran

UN human rights rapporteur Richard Bennett has called for an independent investigation into the targeted killing of former military officers in Tehran, citing serious accountability concerns.

The United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan has called for an independent investigation into the killing of former Afghanistan’s military officers in Tehran.

Richard Bennett said those responsible for the assassinations of former Afghanistan’s police general Ekramuddin Sarea and commander Mohammad Amin Almas must be identified and brought to justice.

In a post on X on Monday, Bennett said he was deeply concerned about the targeted killings of former Afghanistan security personnel on Iranian soil.

Nearly five days after the attack, Iranian authorities have yet to publish the results of their investigation into the killings, which took place in the Valiasr district of Tehran.

General Sarea, a former Afghanistan police commander, and Almas were shot dead last Wednesday evening, highlighting growing concerns over the safety of exiled Afghanistan figures in Iran.

The killings follow a similar incident less than four months ago, when Marouf Gholami, a military commander close to veteran leader Ismail Khan, was assassinated in the northeastern city of Mashhad, Iran.

Human rights groups and Afghanistan’s opposition figures have warned that former military officials living abroad remain vulnerable to targeted attacks following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.

Iran’s foreign ministry said security investigations into the deaths of the two citizens of Afghanistan were ongoing and condemned the attack, while police have yet to release findings despite earlier promises, fuelling calls for transparency and accountability.
