What Time Is Walmart Open Until on Christmas Eve & Day 2025?
Many people have been there. It's Christmas Eve, and you still need to get some last-minute holiday gifts or maybe items for dinner. But is Walmart open or closed on Christmas Eve 2025? And what are the hours if it is?

According to The Detroit Free Press, you won't be in luck if you try to dash to your local Walmart store on Christmas Day. Walmart stores will be closed on Christmas Day 2025.
The Detroit Free Press noted that Christmas is a federal holiday, "meaning business stops across most federal institutions and many private businesses." So don't expect to send government documents or find government offices open on Christmas Day. The same is true of banks.
You will have more luck finding stores open on Christmas Eve than on Christmas Day. For example, according to the Detroit Free Press, Kroger and Whole Foods will be closed on Christmas Day. They are open on Christmas Eve, but may have modified hours. Similarly, Meijer is closed on Christmas Day and open until 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve, the newspaper reported. Costco and Aldi are open on Christmas Eve but not on Christmas Day.
Christmas Day Is One of a Few Federal Holidays, But Christmas Eve Is Not
There are 11 federal holidays established by law, according to the federal government, and Christmas is one of them (Christmas Eve is not, which is one reason more stores are open on that day.) The federal holidays are listed as:
- New Year's Day (January 1).
- Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. (Third Monday in January).
- Washington's Birthday (Third Monday in February).
- Memorial Day (Last Monday in May).
- Juneteenth National Independence Day (June 19).
- Independence Day (July 4).
- Labor Day (First Monday in September).
- Columbus Day (Second Monday in October).
- Veterans Day (November 11).
- Thanksgiving Day (Fourth Thursday in November).
- Christmas Day (December 25).
"Christmas Day was formally declared a federal holiday by President Ulysses S. Grant in 1870," according to The Week. "By the mid-1800s, Christmas was seen as a day of peace and rest. In 1870, President Ulysses S. Grant signed a bill creating four new holidays for federal workers, including Dec. 25."
According to that publication, "In addition to the stern Puritans, many others who lived in early America were simply not Christian. Muslims, Jews and Native Americans had little affinity for Christmas." Added The Week, "Some believe the holidays were passed to create a sense of unity amid post-Civil War tensions."
