What to watch on TV on Tuesday 2 July, from Super Surgeons to the Sewing Bee
THE latest episode of Super Surgeons introduces us to a young woman with a very rare form of cancer.
Her story is both emotional and inspiring, and gives the surgeons at the Royal Marsden Hospital another chance to show their expertise and remarkable levels of care.
Here are TV Mag’s six telly picks for Sunday 9 June 2024…
Super Surgeons: A Chance At Life (9pm C4)
Lauren, 30, one of the cancer patients at the Royal Marsden Hospital who feature in this emotive episode, first found a lump in her abdomen at the age of seven.
At the time, it was believed to be benign, but when a lump returned when she was 25 and was cancerous, the original tumour was re-tested and also found to have been cancerous.
Five years on, another lump has been diagnosed as myxoid liposarcoma, which Consultant Surgical Oncologist Myles Smith describes as “as rare as hen’s teeth”.
An operation to remove the tumour potentially lying on the arteries and veins going into the leg is not without risk.
“This is an exceptional case, and it’s exciting too,” says Myles. “You want to cure that tumour. You want to kind of win.”
The Great British Sewing Bee (9pm BBC1)
It’s time for lingerie week, which paves the way for even more of Kiell’s now trademark puns – some on the slightly more risque side to usual.
The final six are tasked with making a pyjama blouse with piping (one of which is branded ‘a disaster’), before trying their hands at unique lacy shapewear and a bustier dress complete with boning.
The Yorkshire Vet (8pm C5)
A very poorly spaniel has made the very human error of polishing off a family-sized tub of chocolates… but for dogs, it brings about more than a feeling of lethargy and guilt and Julian Norton must perform emergency surgery to save the helpless hound.
Meanwhile, Matt Smith helps the RSPCA with an unusual request – to remove two snakes that have been found in a watercooler bottle and check on the state of their health.
Shudder!
The Baby Scandal That Shocked The World (9pm C5)
The jaw-dropping – and complex – case of the adoption of twin baby girls from America and the subsequent custody battles by three ‘mothers’ – Tranda, the birth mother, Vickie, the American adoptive mother, and Judith, the Welsh adoptive mother – is told in this documentary that hears from each of the women involved.
Back in 2001, the cash-for-babies scandal made headlines when it was reported that the girls were ‘sold’ on the internet to the highest bidder.
Secrets Of The London Underground (8pm Yesterday)
Anyone using London’s packed commuter system may not have considered taking time out of their day to explore its bustling hubs, but fans of this returning series already know that many Underground stations provide a fascinating glimpse into yesteryear.
In the first episode, Earl’s Court station comes under the spotlight as historian Tim Dunn and London Transport Museum curator Siddy Holloway roam its secret tunnels and marvel at its architecture – including the impressive corrugated glass roof that was installed in 1878, and the ferris wheel motifs on one of the entrances depicting the area’s Victorian attraction, The Great Wheel.
Inheriting The Castle – Storyville (10pm BBC4)
Being bestowed with a castle might sound like a dream, but the mansion gifted to Justina, an indigenous Argentinian woman, by her former employer as thanks for her service as a maid, is a crumbling wreck in the remote Argentinian Pampa.
Justina has been instructed that she must never sell, and so this film follows her and her 20-year-old daughter Alexia as they move to the middle of nowhere and try to make ends meet.
