Jurassic Park: 5 Characters That Didn't Deserve To Die (& 5 That Did)
There has been a wide variety of characters seen in the Jurassic Park series, with a mixture of protagonists and antagonists. Within every film, the story presents these characters in either sympathetic or unsympathetic roles, with the deaths that occurred bringing varying emotions to the viewer.
This list contains characters from both the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World films, as the kills displayed are given context. Before Jurassic World: Dominion comes out, let's recap the character deaths seen so far. While there have definitely been characters who totally deserved their fate, there were also others who would've been better off left alive.
10 Didn't Deserve It: Simon Masrani
Although it was technically his fault that more vicious animals were commissioned to be created at Jurassic World, Masrani was innocently ignorant of the dangers behind it. His death was due to a helicopter crash rather than through dinosaurs, but it was still a shame.
Seeing as how he jumped into action to fix his mistakes and own up to them, Masrani really wasn’t a bad guy, and the problem was that he was surrounded by characters like Henry Wu who thrived on the idea of playing God.
9 Deserved It: Dennis Nedry
Every problem that ever happened in the series comes down to Nedry betraying John Hammond; Nedry got what was coming to him when he was devoured by a Dilophosaurus. Even if one were to forgive him for his sins, Nedry’s death was deserved because he caused it himself.
Rather than see the obvious danger of being around a Dilophosaurus, Nedry tried to bargain with it! On top of that, when the dinosaur clearly didn’t understand him, Nedry had it in his mind to run it over with his car. It’s a good thing, then, that the Dilophosaurus got to him first.
8 Didn't Deserve It: Zara Young
Sure, Zara was a bit of a jerk toward the kids, but she was by no means an antagonist. She only did what she was told to, and it got her killed in the most bizarre way.
Not only was she snatched in midair to be fed on by Pteranodons, Zara ended up in the stomach of the Mosasaurus. It was way too much overkill for her to be eaten in such fashion, especially since it was Claire who had told her to watch the kids.
7 Deserved It: Vic Hoskins
In a way, Hoskins certainly got what he wanted as the raptors ended up being used as a weapon. However, it was Hoskins who was at the receiving end, since he was devoured by Delta the raptor. Earlier, Hoskins had conspired with Henry Wu to use the raptors in military operations.
Had Hoskins gotten away with it, dinosaurs would have been commissioned as weapons, changing the landscape of war to further brutality. This makes death his death particularly ironic.
6 Didn't Deserve It: Ben Hildebrand
Easily the most unsung character in the entire series, poor Ben’s death was never mourned by anyone, despite him having saved the life of Eric Kirby. Unfortunately for Ben, all he got in return was getting stuck in a tree where he died of causes still unknown to fans.
One would think he’d have gotten a proper burial once his body was found, but that didn’t transpire as Amanda Kirby outright told Paul that she didn’t care that Ben was dead and was only worried for Eric. From what the audience saw, Ben was a caring man who was unlucky to have gone out the way he did.
5 Deserved It: Ken Wheatley
A mercenary with a cold nature and a fondness for pain toward animals, Wheatley signed his own death warrant when he thought he could take on the Indoraptor. Prior to this, it was shown that he reveled in collecting dinosaur teeth and that he and his men were responsible for abusing the Indoraptor.
This is why, when Wheatley's death arrived, the audience were given no reason to feel sorry for him. Foolishly entering the Indoraptor cage thinking the dinosaur was knocked out, he had his arm ripped off when the dinosaur retaliated. No one was mourning his death a few moments later.
4 Didn't Deserve It: Robert Muldoon
The only sane man among the Jurassic Park staff, Robert Muldoon had advised John Hammond to destroy the raptors before they would have a chance to kill them. Unfortunately, he turned out to be right and was killed by the same creatures.
Muldoon was clearly the bravest character in Jurassic Park as he faced the raptors and even the T-Rex without flinching, along with providing Ellie the opening to flee. He ended up getting outsmarted and devoured by the “clever girl” raptor, and it’s too bad that had to happen.
3 Deserved It: Indominus Rex
If you want to argue that a dinosaur doesn’t count here, then be reminded that the Indominus Rex had displayed very human-like tendencies. Unlike the other dinosaurs, the Indominus Rex slaughtered not for food but for pure fun.
Its path of destruction had no point other than to make something of a survival game scenario for the humans as it stalked them for pleasure. Its DNA was then used to create the Indoraptor, indirectly making the Indominus Rex responsible for future deaths as well. For this reason, watching it be dragged underwater by the Mosasaurus elicits no sadness.
2 Didn't Deserve It: Eddie Carr
If there was ever an outright “hero” character in the series, it would have to be Eddie. After all, despite having two fully grown T-Rex mere inches away from him, he chose to save his friends rather than flee. Tragically, though, Eddie’s sacrifice was unappreciated barring one mention.
Having been ripped apart by the T-Rex couple, poor Eddie was termed as a meal by Roland Tembo, and there was no mention of his heroics later on. Eddie single-handedly saved the lives of his friends, and all he got was a very painful death in return.
1 Deserved It: Eli Mills
The dinosaurs entering the human world were made possible because of Eli Mills’ machinations as he captured them from Isla Nublar to be auctioned off. Mills also had similar plans to Hoskins, in which he wanted to weaponize these creatures for his monetary benefit.
His death was bascially his own fault as he was too obsessed with salvaging the DNA of the Indominus to realize that the T-Rex was right there. As one would expect, Mills was snatched up and devoured, and he had no one to blame for it but himself.
