INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Athletes at historically black and colleges and universities are closing the gap in the classroom, according to the latest academic report from the NCAA. On Thursday, the NCAA's newest Academic Progress Rate showed that single-year scores at HBCUs had climbed to 962 — a 34-point increase over the last five years and significantly higher than the five-point increase seen at other schools in the same span. UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) — A Maryland school teacher has been ordered held without bond after being accused of sexually abusing a 14-year-old student. Prince Georges County police have charged 31-year-old Simeon Smith of Waldorf with sexually abusing a student at a school in Morningside. Officials say Smith was a teacher at Imagine Foundations at Morningside charter school. ATLANTA (AP) — A judge on Wednesday sentenced a well-connected Atlanta attorney to life in prison with the possibility of parole for fatally shooting his business executive wife. Fulton County Superior Court Chief Judge Robert McBurney was required to sentence Claud "Tex" McIver, 75, to life in prison after a jury convicted him last month of felony murder, though it was up to the judge to decide whether he would be eligible for parole.
