Southbound I-880 reopens in Oakland after fatal crash involving FedEx truck
A fatal crash involving a FedEx tractor-trailer in Oakland shut down the southbound lanes of Interstate 880 for five hours Thursday, causing traffic gridlock that stretched into the height of the morning commute, officials said.
The wreck occurred about 3 a.m. when a sedan and the FedEx big rig collided near the freeway’s 66th Avenue exit, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Lanes were reopened by about 8:10 a.m., about five hours after the crash.
The driver of the sedan, whose name was not immediately released, died in the crash. The roof of the car had major damage and one of the FedEx truck’s two trailers was toppled on its side, CHP said.
