Crash involving FedEx big rig snarls traffic on I-880 in Oakland
A fatal crash involving a FedEx tractor-trailer in Oakland shut down all southbound lanes of Interstate 880 early Thursday, causing traffic gridlock that stretched into the height of the morning commute, officials said.
The wreck occurred about 3 a.m. when a sedan and the FedEx big rig collided near the freeway’s 66th Avenue exit, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver of the sedan, whose name was not immediately released, died in the crash. The roof of the car had major damage and one of the FedEx truck’s two trailers was toppled on its side, CHP said.
All southbound lanes of I-880 were blocked and were expected to remain closed until at least 7:45 a.m., CHP said.
