Neighbor accused of stealing gold after helping move it
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man is accused of stealing $26,000 worth of gold bars that he helped his neighbors move for safekeeping as Hurricane Irma approached Florida in September.
The News Herald reports 70-year-old Cynthia Copley and her 69-year-old husband were preparing to evacuate and asked their neighbor, 28-year-old Corey Lofton, to help move the gold bars, which they hid in a cat litter box, to a boat on their property in Panama City.
Court records show they discovered the gold — and their neighbor — missing a week later. When the Copleys called him, he said he had moved to Jacksonville. And that is where he was arrested this week on a DUI charge.
