A Nigerian Artificial Intelligence (AI) company known as Ubenwa has developed a technology that would save the lives of infants around the world by detecting asphyxia.
Asphyxia which is one of the three causes of infant mortality in the world is a condition that arises when the body is deprived of oxygen. Asphyxia could lead to unconsciousness or death when it is not treated.
For babies, asphyxia could lead to death due to the fact that infants are unable to voice out what they are feeling. It was gathered that 900,000 babies die every year from perinatal asphyxia.

In other to save lives of babies, the startup that was put together by a team of geniuses created a machine that would detect and analyse the amplitude and frequency patterns in the cry of a baby.
The company was named Ubenwa which means ‘cry of a child’ in Igbo language due to the fact that the system created by the founders analyses the cry of babies in other to give warning signs of asphyxia in infants.

According to reports, there has been 95% of accuracy in results from trials done to determine the efficiency of the machine. The detection of asphyxia using Ubenwa takes about ten seconds based on trials.
Compared to the current method of using a blood gas analyser, Ubenwa is non-invasive and requires only a cry rather than blood with little or no skill to operate.
