ACC Roundup - Chapel Hill Stunner
Amazing Wofford goes where Clemson has never gone.
First a correction: last night we got a day ahead in ACC At A Glance and printed Thursday’s schedule. In other words, the games listed today were listed yesterday as well rather than UNC and Louisville’s games.
We’d like to say that if we had correctly listed UNC’s game with Wofford we would have remembered that the Terriers have Fletcher Magee and that we saw a national column about him the other day calling him perhaps the best shooter in the country and then we’d have given Wofford a shooter’s chance. j
We’d like to think that but realistically, like everyone else outside of the Wofford locker room, we presumed this would be a really easy game for UNC. As it turned out, it was anything but.
UNC had a dreadful shooting night, hitting just 20-55 and seven of those were threes. So Wofford - Wofford! - held UNC to 14 two point baskets. If UNC hadn't gotten 38 free throw attempts and hit 28 of those, things could have gotten very ugly.
But what is a 6-8 Terrier named Cameron Jackson doing dominating UNC inside?
Jackson had 18 points, nine rebounds, six blocks and four steals. That’s a monster game for someone from the Southern Conference playing in Chapel Hill.
Before this game, Wofford had never even beaten a ranked team. It’s an enormous upset and they deserve all the praise they’re getting.
We figured Louisville would smoke Albany but it turned out it was a great escape instead with Ray Spaulding hitting a shot with 1:40 to give the Cards a one point lead.
Louisville stayed in front and finally prevailed 70-68.
Like UNC, you don’t expect to see Louisville vulnerable to a team that much farther down the food chain but there it is. At least Louisville won.
Two Thursday games as Southern Miss visits FSU and Southeast Lousiana takes on Notre Dame.
We aren’t expecting much out of either opponent but we might’ve said that about Wednesday night too.
