Lucky Dog the Sole Survivor of Plane Crash in Indiana

Amidst the tragic wreckage of a small plane crash that killed three people in southeastern Indiana on Dec. 16, a small glimmer of hope survived: a dog.

According to an Indiana State Police Bulletin, the single engine Cessna crashed into a wooded area near Oldenburg, about 40 miles northwest of Cincinnati, Ohio. Along with the human victims, another dog also died.

Indiana police say the dog who survived the crash showed up at a nearby residence. It was taken to a local veterinarian and treated for injuries.

The flight left Kansas City, Missouri, for its intended destination of Frederick, Maryland. EagleCountryOnline.com reports that the Civil Air Patrol has identified two of the victims, Louis Cantilena and Paul Schuda, who were both majors in the U.S. Air Force’s civilian auxiliary. The third victim was identified as Cantilena’s daughter, Amy. The two men had reportedly flown to Missouri to pick her up from medical school.

The group had just refueled and departed from a Columbus, Indiana, airport. They were only about a mile from the recently closed Batesville Airport.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board. According to Eagle Country Online, a CAP statement said the plane went down after experiencing engine failure.

“Investigators are looking to radio communications and the plane wreckage for further clues. A final determination may take weeks,” according to the Civilian Air Patrol.
