Kyler Murray may have finally broken the Call of Duty curse
So much for Kyler Murray tempting fate by signing an official deal with the mega-popular Call of Duty franchise.
The Arizona Cardinals quarterback — and known COD enthusiast —typically sees his performance begin to significantly drop off each year around November when the latest installment of the video game series drops (and not coincidentally about halfway through the NFL season when opponents have compiled enough film to thoroughly scheme against Murray).
Yet a funny thing has happened this season. After the Cardinals lost the game immediately following Murray’s partnership announcement, Arizona has gone on a four-game win streak with the QB’s play seemingly improving in each victory.
That the last two wins came after Call of Duty hosted a Double XP event from Nov. 1-5 might actually be the end of Murray’s curse.
Of course, part of that could be the fact that the Cardinals got to face to fundamentally broken franchises in the Chicago Bears and New York Jets in each of the last two weeks, but it might just be all those hours of independent study starting to pay off for the QB.
Still, it’s worth considering that the day before Murray announced his deal with Call of Duty, the Cardinals had their lowest playoff expectancy of the year with BetMGM putting the team’s odds at making the postseason at +425 (implied probability of 19 percent).
Since then? Those odds have continued to improve from 33.3 percent in Week 8 to 43.5 percent in Week 10 and Arizona currently has the fourth-softest schedule remaining per ESPN’s Football Power Index.
It seems the Call of Duty curse may have ended. Or Kyler reached that terrible age every gamer fears where the youths have started to whoop you so badly in every match that you quit the game for good.
In which case, it happens to all of us Kyler. We’re here for you.
