It’s movie night once again at Bloody Elbow. Zane and John are back to share another of their all-time favorite combat sports films for your consideration. This time around it’s the modern French classic Rust and Bone.
The sixth feature film from one of the best current directors working in the industry today, Jacques Audiard’s Rust and Bone follows the lives of two people, brought together by chance and the relationship that follows.
Ali, played by Matthias Schoenaerts is a former boxer and kickboxer living with his child and sister as he takes odd jobs and competes in underground MMA events. Stephanie, played by Marion Cotillard, is an orca trainer who loses her legs in a tragic accident. While the 2012 film focuses largely on the intersection of their lives, it also provides a startlingly realistic view of the lifestyle for athletes hoping to find a better life through combat sports.
