José Herrera hospitalised after car crash

Environment minister José Herrera was briefly hospitalised after being involved in a car crash late last night. The government said in a statement that Dr Herrera was a passenger in a private car when it was involved in a road accident in the limits of Attard at around 12.30am on Monday. Nobody was hurt but Dr Herrera and his wife were taken to hospital for observation. They were both discharged shortly after and the minister has returned to work, the government said.

Fire put out at Pieta' motorbike shop

Firefighters were called to Pieta' on Monday morning after a fire broke out at a shop in the locality.  The flames were quickly put out before anybody was hurt, police said. A neighbour who lives nearby was treated for smoke inhalation, they added.

Two days after a protest in Valletta over the wellbeing of karozzin horses, photos on Monday showed one of the shelters intended for the animals was fully occupied by parked cars, leaving the horses to wait in the sun. Updated 12.45pm A man allegedly beat a kitten to death at a popular seaside restaurant on Sunday afternoon, horrifying patrons and prompting an outpouring of anger on social media. Indonesia's holiday island of Lombok suffered damage running into more than 5 trillion rupiah ($342 million) from last week's huge earthquake, authorities said on Monday, as the death toll climbed to more than 430. Melita to follow in GO's footsteps and stop e-mail service

Melita is following in GO’s footsteps and will also be winding down its e-mail service, though not for “some time to come”, according to the company’s chief executive. Travelling around Valletta may have just got a bit easier as a new electric bicycle sharing system, operated by Malta Public Transport, was unveiled on Monday. Tallinja Bikes will have 40 e-bikes available for rent around the capital, with three docking bays at Fort St Elmo, the bottom of the Upper Barrakka lift, and the bus terminus by Tritons Square. Additional bays by the Marsamxett ferry stop and in the centre of the city may be installed in the future, according to the operators, although there are no plans to extend beyond Valletta. Citadel museums and sites open day

Heritage Malta’s museums and sites at the Citadel, together with the Citadel’s visitors’ centre, will be open to the public free of charge on Wednesday, the feast of the Assumption of Mary. Passengers arriving at London's Heathrow Airport had to queue at passport control for up to two-and-a-half hours in July, official figures showed, sparking further criticism from aviation chiefs about delays caused by Britain's border regime. Watch: Migrants found living "inhumanely" in cow stalls in Qormi

Updated 1.15pm with PA statement Planning Authority enforcement officers and police clamped down on a farm in Qormi early on Monday morning, where around 120 immigrants were found to be living in inhumane conditions. The migrants have been evicted from the stalls which housed them, some of which "reeked of death", according to one enforcement officer. Planning Authority enforcement officers clamped down on a farm in Qormi early on Monday morning, where around 120 immigrants were found to be living in inhumane conditions. Gozo Channel has revised its schedule to cope with the post-Santa Marija traffic. Msida mini-market caught selling contraband alcohol

Hundreds of bottles of contraband alcohol were found on the shelves of an Msida mini-market after an intense period of surveillance by the Customs Department.A total of 268 bottles were found on the shelves along with 163 excise bands that were ready to be affixed to other bottles. Whose ducks are they anyway? Environment watchdog cries ‘fowl’

Some 300 ducks that have taken up residence near the Salini nature reserve face an uncertain future after the Environment and Resources Authority ordered their relocation. Joe Schembri, an elderly man who has taken care of the ducks for the past seven years, faces fines if they are not relocated.
