Giants hit in clutch, beat Orioles
The desperate-for-offense Giants got some key hits and beat the Orioles 6-2 on Saturday night, even though Crawford’s bat remained in Cooperstown.
Denard Span had a pair of two-out, two-run singles to help Madison Bumgarner get his first win since July 10, exactly what was ordered by manager Bruce Bochy, who preached about producing with runners in scoring position.
Brandon Belt took it a step further in the seventh inning with a two-run homer into the arcade that gave the Giants a 6-0 lead.
“With guys’ track records, you know it’s going to come,” said Joe Panik, who had three hits and became the first Giant since Andres Galarraga in 2001 to have two ground-rule doubles in the same game.
After each of Panik’s ground-rule doubles, Span followed with a two-run single
Bumgarner yielded three hits in seven scoreless innings and broke a string of five winless starts.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter pushed for the play to be reviewed, and crew chief Jeff Kellogg agreed to contact New York for a rule check.
Derek Law pitched the eighth for his 18th straight scoreless outing, and Sergio Romo struck out the first two batters in the ninth but walked Chris Davis and was replaced by Javier Lopez.
The next three Orioles reached base, including Ryan Flaherty, who hit a two-run single.
