Cal DT David Davis excited about possibility of sixth year
In March, during a conversation about next season, Cal graduate assistant Mark McMillan told David Davis that he wished the senior defensive tackle had another year of eligibility.
After consulting Cal’s training staff, Davis learned he was a strong candidate for a medical hardship waiver to play a sixth season.
A reserve defensive lineman with nine career tackles, Davis is not a program-changing player.
When the final whistle sounded on the Bears’ Armed Forces Bowl win over Air Force, Davis figured his football career was over.
“It’s just great being back with the guys, especially with (James) Looney, Marcus (Manley) and Tony (Mekari),” said Davis, who earned his degree in media studies and is taking a couple classes to stay eligible.
Defensive end Noah Westerfield suffered a sprained ankle in 11-on-11 work Wednesday.
Dykes later lauded Webb’s experience, adding that he’d like to choose a starting quarterback “in the near future.”
