PARIS (AP) — France's parliament has voted through a bill that aims to prepare the national rail company for competition and which has prompted months-long rolling strikes. The Senate approved the bill Thursday, one day after the National Assembly passed it. The plan notably ends newly-hired employees' right to retain jobs and benefits for life. The government has agreed to take on 35 billion euros ($40.8 billion) in debt from the rail company, SNCF, out of its total debt of 50 billion euros ($58 billion) to meet one of unions' demands. Twenty-three-year-old Gaege Bethune of Eldorado, Illinois, is accused of striking Pravin Varughese (VAHR'-geez) several times and driving off, which led to his death from hypothermia. COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — A Sri Lankan court has sentenced a hard-line Buddhist monk to six months imprisonment for threatening the wife of a missing journalist. Galagoda Atte Gnanasara was convicted on two counts — harassing and intimidating — the wife of missing journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda. The conviction was announced Thursday. ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey's military says Turkish and U.S. officials, meeting in Germany, have reached an agreement on a plan for the strategic Syrian town of Manbij that was a source of tension between the NATO allies.
