A rookie police officer in Georgia was fired over the weekend after body camera video showed him striking a man with his patrol car during a pursuit. An internal investigation by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department determined that Officer Taylor Saulters used excessive force when he struck the man, Timmy Patmon, with his vehicle Friday. A fire broke out Saturday afternoon at a metal recycling center at the Port of Oakland, sending a black plume of smoke into the sky that was visible from around the bay. Fire officials cautioned people to avoid the area surrounding the plant, Schnitzer Steel, which is located at 1101 Embarcadero West, near Jack London Square. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A victim in a suburban Kansas City police chase that killed four people has been identified as a father who was headed to see his newborn daughter. KABUL — A suicide bomber targeted a gathering of Afghan religious scholars who were meeting Monday to condemn such attacks, killing at least 12 people, authorities said.
