PARIS (AP) — French authorities say a crash between a school bus and a car has left 27 people injured, including five children who were seriously injured. The local authority in the Gers department said that 18 other children and four adults were slightly injured. The bus was transporting 45 middle school pupils and five adults, including the driver. DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say the man whose body was recovered from the Des Moines River was being sought by police on robbery and assault charges. Des Moines police said Thursday in a news release that the body was identified as that of 20-year-old Des Moines resident Phillip Philavanh. He'd been reported missing by his family on Dec. 12. MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Republican enthusiasm for Gov. Scott Walker's proposed $122 million child rebate appears to be cooling. Walker proposed Wednesday giving every family $100 for each child living at home under age 18. The money would be delivered this fall, shortly before he stands for re-election. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon's high school graduation rate improved in 2017, largely driven by gains from Latino students. Figures released by state education officials Thursday show 77 percent of students earned a diploma in four years, a two percentage point increase from the year before and almost 10 percentage points higher than the class of 2012. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio county court will oversee the process of closing one of the nation's largest online charter schools amid the e-school's legal fight with the state over funding. A Franklin County judge has appointed an outside attorney to handle records and finances of the Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow and report back to the court. EUFAULA, Okla. (AP) — Deer, cattle and horse sightings are common in Oklahoma, but not elephants. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says four circus elephants were spotted briefly on a roadside Wednesday after the truck carrying them to Iowa broke down. WAUKON, Iowa (AP) — A fire has heavily damaged a restaurant in the eastern Iowa city of Waukon. Waukon Fire Chief Dave Martin says firefighters quickly knocked down the flames Tuesday night inside Mulligan's Grill Pub. But the heat generated melted items down the inside walls, and there was significant smoke damage. Firefighters remained on the scene until 10 a.m. Wednesday. PRATTVILLE, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder after attacking two people. Autauga County Sheriff Joe Sedinger tells The Montgomery Advertiser 40-year-old Preston Howard was charged Wednesday for stabbing one person and trying to shoot another. He says Howard walked into a gun shop that morning and stabbed a male shopper several times. The data collected by the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools was based on a survey of more than 500 superintendents. BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Army Corps of Engineers is proposing a $2 million sandbar project on the Missouri River in North Dakota to help threatened and endangered birds. LYNN, Mass. (AP) — An anonymous donor has paid a more than $600 veterinarian bill for a cat rescued from a Massachusetts apartment fire. The Daily Item reports that the 1-year-old cat named Christopher survived the fire earlier this month that left his owner homeless, but required a week at an animal hospital. The cat is being taken care of by another couple while the owner, Michelle Dupont, gets back on her feet.
