NEW YORK (AP) — Yahoo shares slid Thursday on worries that Verizon will walk away or slash its $4.8 billion offer for the company's digital operations after another massive data breach. If the hacks drive Yahoo's users away, the company wouldn't be as valuable to the telecom giant in its quest to build a digital-ad business that could rival industry giants Google and Facebook. The second hack "clearly ups the ante" that Verizon may try to abandon the Yahoo purchase or lower its price, said CFRA Research analyst Scott Kessler.

NEW YORK (AP) — A new survey from the Pew Research Center has found that two-thirds of U.S. adults say fake news stories are causing "a great deal of confusion" about the basic facts of current events. Fourteen percent shared a story they knew was fake, while 16 percent realized a story was fake after sharing it. Since the survey relied on self-reporting, it's unclear how many people shared fake news stories they never realized were fake.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Bernie Sanders' office says the Vermont senator had a small basal-cell carcinoma removed from his cheek in an outpatient procedure. Basal-cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer. Sanders' office says the procedure was completed Thursday and the senator returned to work afterward. Sanders' office says he's later returned to Vermont.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Firefighters had to be summoned to free people stuck in elevators on the USC Health Sciences campus adjacent to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center following a widespread power failure. Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Margaret Stewart says multiple transformers blew Thursday morning, affecting multiple buildings on the sprawling campus east of downtown. Stewart says the number of people involved wasn't immediately known but there have been no injuries.

(AP) — The president of Tacoma Community College has resigned a month after faculty members criticized her leadership in a scathing letter. A majority of tenured faculty signed a letter last month that says Ruhland failed to notify staff and students of changes in the school's accreditation status and that she showed a "pattern of racial insensitivity" in public interactions.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Five St. Louis-area men have been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly kidnapping a man and collecting ransom from his parents. Federal prosecutors say victim was abducted Nov. 21 and taken to the home of one of the kidnappers, where he was beaten, assaulted and attacked with a stun gun.
