A small chemical spill at the South San Francisco campus of biotechnology company Genentech prompted a hazmat scare that caused an employee to be taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure, officials said. Firefighters were alerted of a chemical spill inside the Building 13 research lab just off of 1 DNA Way around 11:15 a.m, authorities said. (AP) — Nicholls State has named women's basketball coach DoBee Plaisance as the university's interim athletic director. Plaisance is in her ninth year as coach of the women's basketball program, leading them to three straight winning seasons and five consecutive appearances in the Southland Conference Tournament.

At least 45 state governors signed on to the Compact to Fight Opioid Addiction committing to fight the epidemic, fueled by the overprescribing of prescription pain relievers. The compact calls on the governors to stop the inappropriate prescribing of painkillers, raise awareness about the problem, and encourage treatment and recovery for those already addicted. About 78 Americans die daily from overdoses of opioids, including prescription pain relievers, heroin and fentanyl, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

(AP) — The University of Wyoming may have to eliminate more faculty and staff positions if other planned budget cuts do not pan out as expected, UW President Laurie Nichols said Wednesday. The two men accused of accidentally starting the wildfire that has destroyed eight homes in Colorado have been charged with arson and a woman who was camping with them has been charged with trespassing, a misdemeanor. WASHINGTON (AP) — The economy and hiring continued to expand modestly across most of the United States from mid-May until the end of June, leaving some firms unable to find skilled workers, the Federal Reserve said Wednesday. The Fed was wary about the financial turmoil and potential economic damage caused by Britain's surprise June 23 decision to leave the European Union. Some regions reported a shortage of skilled workers, especially in information technology, biotechnology and health care.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced Wednesday that the Department of General Services' Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services will start testing mosquitoes in certain areas to determine whether the Zika virus is present in parts of the state. The lab sent collection kits to areas in central and southeastern Virginia last week to gather mosquitoes for testing.

Police say investigators have identified a suspect in the assault, but no charges had been filed by Wednesday afternoon. Police say they are awaiting autopsy results, conducting interviews and consulting with the Polk County Attorney's Office before filing charges.
