ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) — A new Anderson youth basketball league is making a splash in its first year of existence. The (Anderson) Herald Bulletin (bit.ly/27IJS8O ) reports that a seventh-grade girls' team from the Anderson Basketball Association will play in a national tournament in Atlanta this summer. The Lady Heat's coaches say the program for elementary and middle school boys and girls balances athletics with academics while filling a void in the hours after school and during the summer. About 150 players are enrolled in the program this year.

KABUL — The killing of Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Akhtar Mansour in a U.S. drone strike was greeted Sunday by Kabul’s political leadership as a game-changer in efforts to end the long insurgent war plaguing Afghanistan. (AP) — The state board overseeing the finances of the struggling Gary Community School Corp. has approved a $500,000 grant to repair a failing boiler system that left students at Roosevelt College and Career Academy without heat in January. State Sen. Earline Rogers of Gary added language to legislation this year that allowed the board to approve the boiler repairs.

Bernie Sanders, I was staggered to hear Sanders admit he did not know that Wells Fargo Bank was one of the top five big banks in America. (AP) — Authorities in Orange County say a 7-year-old boy didn't hesitate when he smelled smoke at his home, waking up his sleeping father so the pair could escape a spreading fire. The two ran out of the house as the fire spread from the garage to a motorhome in the driveway and to a neighbor's storage shed.

A 5-year-old trapped inside a burning Vallejo home died Sunday morning in a house fire that injured the child’s mother and a teenage boy. Crews arrived on scene to a two-alarm fire in the 800 block of Stella Street around 10 a.m. As heavy smoke and flames billowed from the home, neighbors who called in the emergency told dispatchers a child was trapped inside the home, fire officials said in a statement. The proposed spending plan for the fiscal year starting July 1 relies on no new taxes or fees and has a bottom line lower than budget plans approved by the House and proposed by Republican Gov. The upkeep is expensive, said Terry Holland, a farmer who has grown cotton for about 30 years, and many gin owners found it wasn't worth it to modernize the needed infrastructure and implements. "The state's cotton industry has never seen an extended period of acreage reduction quite like we've seen since 2000," said Scott Stiles, extension economist for the University of Arkansas System's Agriculture Division. The senators wrote the finding has "significant consequence," because under the Oil Pollution Act the liability for cleanup costs for owners or operators of onshore facilities are capped at $634 million.

SEATAC, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say a man in his 20s drowned in a lake in SeaTac. Kent Regional Fire Authority spokesman Kyle Ohashi said the man reportedly jumped out of a small inflatable boat in Angle Lake on Saturday afternoon and immediately sank.
