Panel recommends curtailing sardine fishing season
Sardine fishing on the West Coast, already set to end June 30, could be banned within weeks because of concerns that the silvery fish’s population has dropped below sustainable levels. The Pacific Fishery Management Council late Wednesday voted to recommend an immediate end to sardine fishing this season. While the council’s vote was advisory, the track record is that its recommendations resonate with the Fisheries Service, according to attorney Andrea Treece of the environmental advocacy group Earthjustice.
