Australian bishop to be sentenced next month for cover-up
NEWCASTLE, Australia (AP) — A lawyer for the most senior Roman Catholic cleric to be convicted of covering up child sex abuse has told an Australian court that the 67-year-old archbishop might not survive being sent to prison.
Newcastle Magistrate Robert Stone said Tuesday he will sentence Adelaide Archbishop Philip Wilson on July 3.
Stone found Wilson guilty last month in the Newcastle Local Court of failing to report to police the repeated abuse of two altar boys by a pedophile in the Hunter Valley region north of Sydney during the 1970s. Wilson faces a potential maximum sentence of two years in prison.
