How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Wednesday Stocks posted solid gains in a quiet session Wednesday, helped by advances in health-care and industrial companies. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 122.10 points, or 0.7 percent, to close at 16,912.29. The Nasdaq composite rose 42.79 points, or 0.9 percent, to 4,791.15.

The cosmetics maker cut its sales forecast, citing the stronger U.S. dollar cutting into revenue and slow growth in China. The wine, liquor and beer company reported better-than-expected fiscal second-quarter profit and revenue and issued a positive outlook. The software maker provided a disappointing 2016 profit and sales outlook, saying the stronger dollar is cutting into revenue.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Monsanto Co. said Wednesday it will eliminate 2,600 jobs as part of a cost-saving plan designed to deal with falling sales of its biotech seeds and herbicides, which pushed its quarterly losses deeper into the red. CEO Hugh Grant pointed to the negative impact of foreign exchange rates as well as falling crop prices that have squeezed farmers.
