49ers sign top draft pick Trey Lance just in time for training camp practice
Quarterback Trey Lance has signed his $34 million rookie contract with the 49ers.
SANTA CLARA — Let the games — and practices and quarterback controversy — begin.
Trey Lance signed his rookie contract Wednesday morning, a day after his fellow 49ers reported for training camp, his agency CAA announced in a tweet.
Lance, as the No. 3 overall draft pick, is slotted to make $34.1 million on his four-year deal with a team option for 2025, according to OverTheCap.com.

That’s a raise from last year’s No. 3 slot in which Detroit Lions cornerback Jeff Okudah signed for $33.5 million.
Lance participated in the 49ers’ offseason program alongside incumbent starter Jimmy Garoppolo, who has two years remaining on his own contract at about $25 million annually.
Over the past few months, Lance has worked out away from the facility with some 49ers receivers, including Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, Mohamed Sanu and River Cracraft.
Garoppolo, as in past offseasons, has kept a low profile. He did, however, announce Monday he is collaborating with Travis Mathew clothing and Cuater shoes. He’s worn Jordan brand the past three seasons.
Lance is not yet challenging for the 49ers’ starting job, coach Kyle Shanahan made clear at a training camp-opening press conference Tuesday.
“There’s no open competition, where they’re getting equal reps with the same group,” Shanahan said. “Jimmy’s coming in as the 1, Trey as the 2.”
