Spider-Woman Just Changed Costume, But She's as Hardcore as Ever
Despite her ongoing series giving her a new, darker suit, Spider-Woman is returning to her original suit in a new preview from Marvel Comics.
Warning: minor spoilers ahead for Spider-Woman #11!
Spider-Woman just changed her costume, but she's as hardcore as ever. Spider-Woman #11 shows that Spider-Woman is going back to her old look. This doesn't mean that she is regressing as a character though. She is just as deadly and vicious as she's ever been.
Spider-Woman first appeared in Marvel Spotlight #32 in 1977. Her original red, yellow, and black costume from the 1970s is still used often and is Jessica Drew's most recognizable suit. She had previously changed up her look at the beginning of this series, taking darker tones to match a change in her day-to-day operations. Now, the previous arc has concluded and Jessica is about to begin a new adventure, and with it comes the return of her most iconic costume.
A new preview for Spider-Woman #11 - written by Karla Pacheco with art by Pere Pérez - reveals that Jessica Drew is back to her original suit. Spider-Woman #1 introduced a new suit for Spider-Woman that was darker, more similar to the one that Miles Morales wears. Even though Jessica's life seems to be frequently changing, one thing that remains constant is the routine use of her classic suit. Her previous suit in this series definitely wasn't the first time her suit had changed. Even though her suit is changing again, the new preview from Marvel shows that Jessica is still as tough as ever. Check it out here:
Fans who may worry that a new suit change will bring about a change in how edgy Spider-Woman has been lately will be relieved to see this preview. She is seen taking on a pair of super-villains - los Espadas Gemelas de Toledo - using a pair of knives. She isn't pulling punches, mincing words, or sparing any effort in fighting these sword-wielding twins. Spider-Woman has been many things over her comic life, but someone who is soft on crime has never been one of them. Jessica Drew has been an agent of HYDRA, a detective spy, an Avenger, and also a mom. Like her male counterpart, Spider-Man, she is also down on her luck when it comes to money - which is part of why she changed her suit in this series to begin with.
In issue #1, Jessica took time off from being a standard hero - doing the right thing because it is the right thing - in order to make much-needed money. She took on a protection job with high pay. She perceived this as a big shift in her operations; a change big enough to warrant completely altering her main look. Spider-Woman's past and a mysterious disease caught up to her, causing her to experience higher levels of rage than she usually has. This impacted her fighting style, causing her to be more ruthless to foes - and far more dangerous. She has since found a drug to potentially cure her, but it makes her more aggressive and negatively impacts her mental health. Even though her suit is changing again, Spider-Woman is still as aggressive and vicious a fighter as she has been throughout this series.
