Daniel Kaluuya Faces Tech Issues During Golden Globes Speech
In accepting the Golden Globe Award for Judas and the Black Messiah, Daniel Kaluuya encountered a technical difficulty during his speech.
Daniel Kaluuya had to face technical issues as he won a Golden Globe Award. Kaluuya has been receiving rave reviews for his performance as activist and chairman of the Black Panther Party, Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah, directed by Shaka King and produced by Ryan Coogler. The film is about the infiltration of the Black Panther Party by William O'Neal, an FBI informant. Up until this point, Kaluuya has been singled out by all the awards shows as a supporting actor for the movie.
Kaluuya rose to fame in Jordan Peele's horror film Get Out, which he received his first Academy Award nomination as Chris Washington. Since then, Kaluuya has appeared and starred in films such as Black Panther, Widows, and Queen & Slim. Kaluuya was also nominated for the Golden Globe for Get Out. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Golden Globe Awards were held in New York City and Los Angeles and the nominees joined virtually from their homes. Kaluuya was nominated against Sacha Baron Cohen for The Trial of the Chicago 7, Jared Leto for The Little Things, Bill Murray for On The Rocks, and Leslie Odom Jr. for One Night in Miami.
Now Kaluuya can be called a Golden Globe winner, but viewers almost did not hear his speech due to technical difficulties. Presenter Laura Dern announced Kaluuya as the winner of Best Supporting Actor -- Motion Picture and the camera cuts to Kaluuya who cannot be heard by the viewers. Dern explains the bad connection and it seems like the awards show will continue on to the next category, before it cuts back to Kaluuya who can now be heard and has quite a reaction to the issue before resuming his acceptance speech. NBC Entertainment posted Kaluuya's win on Twitter:
Kaluuya's category was the first award presented of the night so it had a the biggest chance of encountering a technical problem if any. The Golden Globes Awards and subsequent award ceremonies were delayed due to the pandemic, which is why the Oscars are scheduled to be held at the end of April. Since eventually the show must go on, the Golden Globes held a virtual ceremony with strict safety precautions. With Kaluuya physically unable to attend the ceremony, attending remotely is the best alternative.
Coordinating a virtual awards ceremony with nominees spread out all across the world can be challenging but it is doable. The 2020 Emmy Awards was the first major televised award show to attempt and test the waters and managed to pull it off without any difficulties. Since the Golden Globes Awards is the first award show to give viewers a sneak peek of what may happen at the upcoming shows, most namely the Oscars, Kaluuya could very well be giving several acceptance speeches. While the Oscars do not plan to be remote, hopefully in others if Kaluuya does happen to win, there will not be any issues as he is accepting the award.
