Crisis On Infinite Earths Almost Had Constantine & Swamp Thing Team Up
Arrowverse producer Marc Guggenheim reveals he wanted Legends of Tomorrow's John Constantine and Swamp Thing to meet during Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Producer Marc Guggenheim reveals the Arrowverse's Crisis on Infinite Earths event could have featured one iconic pairing: John Constantine and Swamp Thing. As this season's crossover, Crisis united all five Arrowverse series on The CW. However, for the first time, it also featured many other DC TV shows and movies. In doing so, it confirmed their existence in the Arrow world. The crossover brought fellow CW series Black Lightning into the fold and even onto the same Earth. Crisis on Infinite Earths also showed characters from DC Universe's shows, including Titans, Swamp Thing, and upcoming series Stargirl.
Unlike Titans, Swamp Thing is no longer on the air, having been canceled in 2019 after its first episode. The series followed the titular plant creature, as well as Dr. Abby Arcane, who helps Swamp Thing protect his home. Constantine, meanwhile, starred in his own series on NBC, before moving to The CW's Legends of Tomorrow. In the comics, Constantine and Swamp Thing frequently join forces. However, they haven't yet interacted in the Arrowverse. Though, Swamp Thing has been referenced on Legends of Tomorrow, during a season 4 episode taking place in a summer camp.
In an interview with Fake Nerd Podcast, Arrowverse producer Marc Guggenheim spoke about wishing Swamp Thing and Constantine had been able to meet during Crisis on Infinite Earths. Guggenheim explained, "I did want Swamp Thing to be a big part of the crossover, because - if you've got Constantine - to not have Constantine and Swamp Thing together is a missed opportunity." He also talked about why a team up didn't come to fruition: "I'll just say that, for a variety of different reasons, I couldn't make that happen." Instead, like characters from Titans, Swamp Thing was shown briefly, but didn't interact with any of the Arrowverse characters, including Constantine.
Though Crisis on Infinite Earths marked the first time shows from DC Universe and The CW appeared together, upcoming series Stargirl will be a collaboration of sorts between the two. The show will premiere on the DC Universe streaming service before airing the next day on The CW. Earlier this week, DC Universe announced it would be delaying Stargirl's release on both DC Universe and The CW by one week. This is due to changing schedules as a result of the coronavirus, which has affected CW air dates. All Arrowverse shows that were filming have been shut down, with others, like Legends of Tomorrow, completing post-production from home.
Considering the size of the Crisis on Infinite Earths event, it's not surprising some characters were left out or given less to do. Even though Swamp Thing and Constantine didn't interact, fans were treated to a scene with Constantine and Lucifer Morningstar, who has his own show on Netflix. With so many characters and storylines to service, it makes sense Constantine got one team up rather than two. Though Constantine and Swamp Thing didn't meet during Crisis on Infinite Earths, fans can still root for a meeting sometime on Legends of Tomorrow.
