ASDA has once again cut up to 2p off per litre of fuel across its petrol stations.
From today, any driver filling up at an Asda petrol station will now pay no more than 117.7p per litre on unleaded and 122.7p per litre on diesel.
It’s another welcome move for motorists, with Asda last cutting fuel prices as recently as November 22.
The reductions are now expected to be matched by the other big four supermarkets, with Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco forced to go lower to match its rival.
It comes following criticism last week of fuel vouchers and discounts being offered by some of the supermarkets.
A poll of 18,000 AA members revealed 58 per cent of people consider money-off fuel offers an “underhand way” of getting shoppers to spend more money at the brand.
Ways to cut down on your fuel costs
HERE are some tips on how you can slash the cost of fuel
- Make your car more fuel-efficient. You can do this by keeping your tyres inflated, taking the roof rack off, emptying your car of clutter and turning off your air con when driving at lower speeds.
- Find the cheapest fuel prices. PetrolPrices.com and Confused.com allows you to search prices of UK petrol stations. All you need to do is enter in your postcode and tell it how far you want to travel (up to 20 miles).
- Drive more efficiently. Some ways to do this, include:
- Accelerate gradually without over-revving
- Always drive on the highest possible gear
- If you can, allow your car to slow down naturally as your brake is a money burner
- Re-starting your car is expensive, if you can keep moving
And 38 per cent said they felt manipulated by fuel offers tied to how much they spend at supermarkets.
Both Morrisons and Sainsbury’s currently offer 10p a litre off fuel if motorists spend £60 or more on groceries.
The Morrisons deal ends this Sunday – December 15 – while the latter ends on December 20.
Asda’s senior fuel buyer Dave Tyrer said: “We know how important saving money is for our customers at this time of year, so we will always aim to keep the cost of essentials down whether that’s on fuel, food or fashion.
“Over the last two weeks we’ve brought fuel prices down by up to 4ppl without any vouchering requirements meaning all our customers, regardless of their budget, will benefit from a price cut at the pumps.”
The Sun has asked Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco whether they plan to cut fuel prices too. We’ll update this story as soon as we hear back.
