(AP) — A California man confessed after his arrest that he made the hoax calls that led a police officer to fatally shoot an unarmed man in Kansas, adding he routinely made similar calls to seek attention, a detective testified Tuesday. Tyler Barriss, 25, is accused of calling Wichita police from Los Angeles on Dec. 28 to report a shooting and kidnapping at a Wichita home. PLAINFIELD, N.J. — A New Jersey city will pay $450,000 to settle a lawsuit with the deputy fire chief who alleged he wasn’t promoted because he is white. Jeffrey Courtney filed a lawsuit in 2016 against Plainfield Fire Chief Frank Tidwell, the city of Plainfield and the Plainfield Fire Department. CANTON, Conn. (AP) — What might be the world's hairiest vandal has destroyed the interior of a Connecticut woman's car. Linda Morad tells WFSB-TV she was house-sitting in Canton last Friday when she noticed her car lights on and heard strange noises. She called police. Officers found a full-grown bear that had somehow gotten into Morad's car and could not get out. Police opened a door, ran to the other side of the vehicle, and the bear scampered into the woods.
