Bookstores in Moscow lost 32% in revenue compared to 2019. On average across Russia, stores lost 22% of their profits. The corresponding research was carried out by the IT company “Evotor” using the analysis of data from online cash registers. RBC has its results.
According to the company, in June-July 2020 the turnover of brick-and-mortar bookstores was 25-28% lower than last year. In August, sales were boosted by increased demand for office supplies and educational literature. During this period, stores lagged behind the results of 2019 by only 10%.
Researchers at Evotor believe that such a drop in revenue is due to the spillover of the book business into online sales. Small offline stores cannot compete with chain stores either in assortment or prices. Eventually they close. Compared to the beginning of the pandemic, the number of bookstores in the capital has decreased by 28%. At the same time, they decreased by 18% throughout Russia.
At the same time, the average check in stores due to the rise in prices for book products in October was 6% higher than last year. Then the average purchase was about 977 rubles.
For the study, data from the Evotor online cash registers were used. There are more than 650 thousand of them throughout Russia. Experts compared the monthly turnover at online checkouts for October 1-25 in 2020 and 2019, adjusted for the base growth. To determine the number of operating stores, we compared the average daily number of online cash registers, punching from one check per day, for the week from October 19 to 25 with the data for the week from March 2 to 8.
In May, due to the pandemic, the Respublika bookstore chain closed all retail outlets in St. Petersburg. The company planned to open new stores after the restrictions were lifted. Then the CEO of the chain Anatoly Shutka said that the coronavirus will greatly affect the behavior of buyers. At that time, the company hoped to restore traffic no earlier than 2021. By October 2020, not a single Respublika offline store had opened.
